🚗 Is It Safe to Drive in Hurghada, Egypt?
By Yasmin Bux
If you’ve ever wondered, “Is it safe to drive in Hurghada?” the short answer is: absolutely — and it might just become one of your favorite travel experiences!
I’ve driven in several countries, but driving in Hurghada, Egypt was something else entirely — calm, friendly, and surprisingly smooth. Forget the horror stories about chaotic driving in big cities; Hurghada is the opposite.
The Speed Limits in Hurghada — Relaxed and Refreshing
In the city center (around Sheraton Road), most people drive at about 40 km/h. On the airport road, it’s usually 60 km/h. And if you hit the “fast” road — brace yourself — it’s 90 km/h! So yes, speed demons may need a nap, but for everyone else, it’s pure relaxation.
What amazed me most is how few people speed here. Hurghada has a peaceful rhythm, and even the roads seem to follow it.
Parking Paradise
One of the joys of driving in Hurghada is parking. You can find a spot anywhere — and it’s free. The only “problem”? Finding a shaded spot in a city where the sun never takes a day off. Honestly, that’s a problem I can live with!
Sunshine, Always
I’ve never seen rain in Hurghada. Locals told me it might drizzle once a year — maybe. So, if you’re allergic to umbrellas, this is your dream destination.
Traffic? What Traffic? Ohh la la
Wherever you’re going — the marina, the beaches, or the malls — it’s rarely more than a 15-minute drive. There’s almost no traffic. People cross the street wherever they feel like it, but drivers don’t shout or honk. Egyptians seem to communicate using physics, patience, and polite smiles.
It’s not chaos; it’s choreography. A kind of road-side ballet that somehow works perfectly.
A Culture of Care and Kindness
One of the most beautiful things about driving in Hurghada is the community spirit. If someone’s car breaks down, people immediately stop to help. If an elderly person wants to cross, they raise a hand — and all cars stop instantly, no questions asked.
It’s genuine respect in motion, and I’ve never seen anything like it elsewhere.
The Radar Reality
Now, for my fellow rule-breakers: if you get caught speeding by a radar omg! , don’t panic. The fine is around 100 EGP (about £1.60). There are no points, no license suspensions, and no angry letters in the post. It’s more of a friendly nudge saying, “Slow down and enjoy the sunshine.”
The Harmony of the Hurghada Highway
In short, driving in Hurghada is safe, simple, and surprisingly soothing. You can use your UK driving license, rent a car easily (prices are much cheaper than in Europe), and explore the city with total freedom.
I call it “driving harmony” — a rare feeling where everyone seems to look out for each other on the road.
So next time you visit Hurghada, don’t hesitate to rent a car, roll down the windows, and cruise along the Red Sea with your favorite playlist. Just remember: the only traffic jam you’ll find here is a group of tourists riding horses to cross the street towards the beach — and honestly, even that’s beautiful to watch.
